The cornerstone of any online banking safety strategy should be a strong password. Your banking password is one of the few things protecting your assets from criminals, so you should take some care in making it sufficiently complex. When you're at the ATM or bank teller window taking out money, do you stop to check your email or play a game of Angry Birds? Of course you don't, so don't do it while you're banking online.
When you are logged into your bank on your computer, you shouldn't have any other browser tabs or any other applications open. This helps reduce the number of possible attack vectors that internet criminals can use to get at you while you're logged in to your bank.
If you open a malware infected email while you're banking, a hacker may be able to capture your keystrokes as you log into your bank or they might take over your session entirely. If you don't open email or other websites while banking then you have reduced the risk of account compromise by effectively closing those avenues of attack.
It's best to avoid performing any other task on your computer while you're logged into your bank. Log in to your bank, do your banking, log out, and then play all the Angry Birds you want.

You should always log out of your bank when you have finished with your transactions. Not logging out of your bank may put you at greater risk for session hijacking and cross-site scripting exploits. You may also want to clear your browser cache after you're done with your banking just as an extra precaution.

Many banks will allow you to set up text or email based notifications when specific conditions are met, such as when a withdrawal over $500 is made, or your balance drops below a predetermined amount. You should take advantage of this capability and set up account alerts if they are offered by your bank.

Banks are extremely popular targets for phishing attacks. You should never trust any email that states that it is from your bank. Never click any links in bank-related emails especially ones that say they will take you to the login page to allow you to "update your account information". These types of emails are often associated with cross-site scripting attacks where hackers capture your login information as you visit your banks website via a malicious proxy site that collects your information.
If you receive any suspicious emails claiming to be from your bank, call your bank on the phone number contained in your most recent statement from them. Don't call any number listed in an email.
