1. How can I watch the Preakness Stakes?
Tune in on Saturday to NBC. Coverage of the Preakness Stakes begins at 4:30 p.m. ET. However, just like the Kentucky Derby, the actual race itself won't begin until hours later, with the post time set for 6:18 p.m.
2. What is the Preakness Stakes?
As mentioned earlier, it's the second leg of the Triple Crown. The setting on Saturday will be Baltimore at Pimlico Race Course, and the race itself goes for a distance of just under 1.2 miles.
While it's not as popular as the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes is typically the second-most attended horse race. Last year, over 123,000 people came out to Pimlico Race Course to watch California Chrome take first place. For the sake of comparison, nearly 165,000 spectators were at the Kentucky Derby in 2014.
3. How about some history?
- Pimlico Race Course is the second oldest racetrack in the country.
- The course was opened in 1870.
- The cost of building the track was $25,000.
- Instead of receiving the actual Woodlawn Vase, the winner now receives a replica valued at $30,000.
- The real Woodlawn Vase was once worth $1 million.
- The race's nickname is "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans," and fittingly, the winner on Saturday will receive a blanket of yellow and black flowers.
4. How is it different from the Kentucky Derby?
For starters, there aren't going to be nearly as many horses running on Saturday as there were at the Kentucky Derby. Only eight horses make up the field at the Preakness Stakes, which is its lowest figure since 2000.
Secondly, the race is actually a bit shorter in distance. While the Kentucky Derby is actually 1.25 miles long, the Preakness Stakes measures in at 1.1875 miles.
And lastly, you probably won't see Gronk, Tom Brady, and the rest of the Patriots flying in on a private jet. The Preakness Stakes is important in terms of horse racing, but it doesn't match up to the Kentucky Derby in terms of scale and celebrities.
Will American Pharoah also win the Preakness? (USATSI)5. Who are the contenders?
As mentioned, there are eight horses running, which makes it a bit easier to list than the Kentucky Derby. The eight horses are:
- American Pharoah (Kentucky Derby winner)
- Dortmund (Third place at the Kentucky Derby)
- Mr. Z
- Danzig Moon
- Tale of Verve
- Bodhisattva
- Divining Rod
- Firing Line (Second place at the Kentucky Derby)
6. Who is the favorite?
American Pharoah. Get used to him.
Besides that, your best bets are Dortmund and Firing Line, who both finished in the top-3 at the Kentucky Derby. Our Hank Goldberg suggests a superfecta box with 1, 2, 4, 7, 8. If you want to get spicy, key the 4 horse in spots 2, 3, 4 in your bet. For more from Hank, watch the video atop the page. Oh, and btw, he landed the top four horses in the Derby.
7. What're the full odds?
- American Pharoah: 4-5
- Dortmund: 7-2
- Mr. Z: 20-1
- Danzig Moon: 15-1
- Tale of Verve: 30-1
- Bodhisattva: 20-1
- Divining Rod: 12-1
- Firing Line: 4-1
8. So, what's the deal with American Pharoah?
You mean in addition to winning the Kentucky Derby?
So yeah, American Pharoah entered as the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby and ended up winning over Firing Line and Dortmund. But, while American Pharoah is listed at 4-5 odds, he'll have a much more difficult time winning on Saturday. That's because of his pole position.
During Wednesday's random draw, American Pharoah was assigned to the first post. Out of the last 54 Preakness winners, only one horse has won from the first post. And if you recall what happened a few weeks back, American Pharoah won the Kentucky Derby by chasing the competition from the outside. That won't be a possible scenario on Saturday.
So, while he's definitely the best horse in the race, American Pharoah is going to be forced to adapt if he hopes to have a shot at winning.
9. How much are tickets?
Prices vary per section, but to give you an idea, a ticket for general admission -- which does not include seating -- will cost $25. Again, this does not include seating. If you want a seat, you'll have to spend at least $95, but most seats are already sold out.
10. What's next?
The Belmont Stakes -- the third and final leg of the Triple Crown -- which will be run during the first week of June. If American Pharoah wins on Saturday, it'll turn the Belmont Stakes into a must watch event, as he'll vie for the Triple Crown.
Enjoy the race.
